UPDATE: Devil’s Woodyard site declared as ‘dormant’ – affected residents allowed to return to their homes

The Devil’s Woodyard site in Princes Town has been declared as dormant by the UWI Seismic Research Centre.

Several homes were this morning evacuated near the site, after eruptions resulted in mud spewing out approximately 100 metres in width and 6 metres in height.

The first set of reported volcanic activities occurred at approximately 6pm yesterday, with two following at 4:20am and 8:52am this morning.

But after continuous assessments of the site this afternoon, the SRC indicated that the flammability level is low.

The EMA meanwhile conducted air quality tests and has found no increased harmful gases in the area.

It says 8 families with a total of 40 persons who were initially evacuated from the eastern side of the site have been allowed to return to their homes.

The ODPM meanwhile says it has received no reports of injury or structural damage to property.

It adds thought that the Hindustan Road in New Grant will remain closed to the general public, except to persons who reside in the area.

The ODPM says citizens and tourists are advised to avoid visiting the area until there is official word by the relevant authorities.
