TTUTA: Primary schools starved for funding

Many primary schools are currently functioning with little or no whiteboard markers, stationery and toilet paper do to a lack of direct funding from the Education Ministry.

That’s the claim from TTUTA, which says in most cases, none have been provided so far for the academic year, which began last September.

It says schools have been forced to hold fund raising activities and parents are being asked to contribute supplies or money.

President Lynsley Doodhai says these activities have contributed to valuable school time being lost, since teachers are also helping out.

The TTUTA President says Direct Funding began in 2012 as a monetary allocation from the Education Ministry to Primary Schools, to purchase stationary and cleaning items.
