Strong opening for “Spiderman – Homecoming”

Strong opening for “Spiderman – Homecoming”

This is the summer of sequels.

“Pirates of the Caribbean 5”, “Transformers 5”, and “Despicable Me 3” are all out and while they have had decent showings,  they still did not do quite as well as expected.

Superhero flicks though have bucked the trend.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” managed $385.5 million in the United States and Canada (so far), while “Wonder Woman” has out grossed both “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad”.

Add “Spider-Man – Homecoming” to the list.

Despite being the second reboot of Spider-Man in recent times, the latest take starring Tom Holland has taken a cool $117 million on its debut weekend in North America.

It also made a further $140 million worldwide.

Part of the success has come from the character’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Reviews have also been glowing, with many praising the lead actor and the high-school setting.
