Nicholas Pooran smashed an unbeaten half-century as his Sylhet Sixers beat the Chittagong Vikings in 7th match of this year’s Bangladesh Premier League.
The Sixers won the toss and chose to bat but after the first 16 balls, may have been wondering if they made the wrong choice.
They were 6/3 after 2.4 overs as captain David Warner watched Liton Das, Nassir Hossain and Sabbir Rahman head back to the dugout for 0, 3 and 0 respectively.
Warner (59) and Afif Hossain (45) put on 71 for the 4th wicket before Hossain was caught behind trying to square cut medium-pacer Khaled Ahmed.
Pooran joined Warner and added 70 for the 5th wicket.
The Aussie was eventually caught in the cover region trying to switch hit a full toss off Robbie Frylinck.
Pooran ended not out on 52 after hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes to help Sylhet to 168/5.
Taskin Ahmed then took a 4-wicket haul as the Vikings fell short by 5 runs in a thrilling finish.
Al-Amin Hossain bowled the final 6 balls with Chittagong needing 24.
Frylinck tried his best, smashing two sixes but couldn’t hit another off the final ball to tie the game.
Pooran was named Man of the Match who said the team backed themselves to defend what he believes wasn’t a big total.
The Trinbagonian wicketkeeper-batsman has now played two matches in this year’s BPL.
He scored 41 off 26 balls in a losing effort against the Comilla Victorians.
Pooran has seen a turnaround in form in these past couple games after a T20i series against Bangladesh where he performed below his capabilities.
He had scores of 23*, 14 and 29 as West Indies won a hard-fought 3-match series 2-1.
