Significant quantities of Sargassum seaweed spotted in Mayaro

Significant quantities of sargassum seaweed have been observed off the south eastern coast of Trinidad.

This was confirmed by the ODPM in a Facebook post earlier today.

It says the seaweed was observed mainly on the Mayaro Beach.

Sargassum is a type of algae that floats in island-like masses, has a strong odour and insects may be present.

However, it does not sting or irritate skin, nor is the odour toxic.

It is urging all citizens, tourists an all marine interests to be vigilant and exercise caution when on the nation’s beaches, and venturing out to sea.
