Prime Minister to meet with Opposition Leader on Parliamentary matters

The issue of crime in T&T has not formed the main agenda for next Tuesday’s meeting between Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley and Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

In fact, according to the Office of the Prime Minister, the meeting “is in an effort to obtain Parliamentary collaboration as a way forward”. Therefore seven items on the agenda according to the Prime Minister, are those carded to go before the Parliament which require a special majority.

The items listed for discussion at the meeting to be held from 2:00pm include:
1. Internal Self Government for Tobago
2. Campaign Finance Reform
3. Anti-Gang Legislation
4. Difficulty within the Judiciary (JLSC Matter)
5. The Integrity Commission
6. Service Commissions’ effectiveness
7. Code of Conduct for Members of Parliament
The OPM said that Mrs. Persad-Bissessar has gone on to request that crime, the economy and jobs be included in the agenda. The Prime Minister said some discussion on crime could be entertained under the agenda item of anti-gang legislation.

However, the issues of jobs and the economy will not be discussed as the OPM stated that they “do not fall into the category of items to be discussed”.

The OPM added that the Prime Minister believes the discussions with the Opposition on matters that require their engagement in the Parliament “is in the best interest of the nation and will redound to the benefit of the people of Trinidad and Tobago”.
