Several persons were spared from paying a $100,000 fine after they were found with a Scarlet Ibis in Mayaro yesterday.

According to Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat, a man was in the area when he overheard plans to cook the protected bird.

Mr Rambharat posted on his Facebook page that the men were persuaded to exchange the bird for $200 after which it was taken to the Emperor Valley Zoo.

He says while fear of the increased fine is still to be instilled in citizens, he is grateful that the individual took the risk to intervene and save the National Bird.
