Fishermen and Friends of the Sea (FFOS) is questioning whether water costs are draining T&T’s economy.
Yesterday, Public Utilities Minster Robert Le Hunte appeared before Parliament’s Standing Finance Committee seeking a $200M budgetary variation for expenses, including outstanding payments to DESALCOTT.
The Minister also revealed that T&T spent TT$680M for desalinated water last year, but failed to state the amount spent over the past 20 years.
The FFOS is concerned about efforts to minimize dependence on these “lucrative” desalinated companies.
The local group is also questioning why Desalcott’s 20 year supply contract, signed in 1999, was renewed in 2016, three years before it expires.
