The two artists with the most Grammy nominations this year turned down the offer to perform at the show.
That’s according to Ken Ehrlich, the show’s longtime producer.
Rapper Kendrick Lamar leads this year with eight nominations, followed by Drake who has seven, while Childish Gambino has five.
The New York Times quotes Ehrlich as saying that he offered Drake, Lamar and Childish Gambino possible performance slots and was rebuffed.
He then allegedly went on to make this comment:
“The fact of the matter is, we continue to have a problem in the hip-hop world. When they don’t take home the big prize, the regard of the academy, and what the Grammys represent, continues to be less meaningful to the hip-hop community, which is sad.”
According to CNN, the Grammys has been accused of not having an even playing field for minority and women artists.
This prompted the Recording Academy recently to make an effort to diversify its membership.
None of the three rappers have stated their reasons for turning down the performance offers.
