The long-awaited “Mortal Kombat” is coming!

According to a release posted to Twitter by an ABC News reporter, pre-production will begin in about a month’s time, with shooting to take place in South Australia.

Rumors of a new movie adaptation of the gore-filled video game franchise have been swirling since 2011, and things got serious in 2015 with the news that Simon McQuoid and James Wan had signed on as director and producer, respectively.

Wan directed the recent hit “Aquaman” as well as “Insidious”, “Insidious: Chapter 2”, “The Conjuring”, “The Conjuring 2” and “Furious 7”.

McQuoid meanwhile is known primarily for his commercial work, most notably, commercials for franchises like “Halo” and “Call of Duty”.

The “Mortal Kombat” video game was first released in 1992, and is now one of the most successful fighting franchises ever.

There have been two movie adaptations: “Mortal Kombat” (1995), and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997).
