Hope disappointed despite pulling off exciting tie in 2nd India ODI

Shai Hope slapped Umesh Yadav to the boundary to pull off a thrilling tied ODI against India in their 2nd match of the series.

Hope ended on 123 after scoring 6 runs off the final two balls of the game against the 2nd best ODI team in the world.

Earlier, India made 321/6 on the back of Virat Kohli’s 157 which made him the fastest to 10,000 ODI runs.

In reply the Windies, ranked 9th in the world, lost some early wickets ending up at 78/3 but in stepped Shimron Hetmyer who put together 143 for the 4th wicket with Hope before falling for a fiery 64-ball 94.

A tight penultimate by Mohammed Shami went for just 6 runs leaving 14 needed from the last 6 balls to be bowled by Umesh Yadav.

The next three balls brought 7 runs including a leg-bye for 4 but then Ashley Nurse was caught at deep third man leaving 7 needed from the last 2 balls.

The key was that the batsmen crossed before the catch was taken meaning Hope, not Kemar Roach, was on strike for those crucial deliveries.

The 5th ball, a full delivery, was swung to deep midwicket for 2.

Another full one followed but Hope made good contact and the ball raced to the point boundary past a despairing Ambati Rayudu.

Speaking after the game, Hope expressed his disappointment with the result stating that the Windies’ aim was to win.
