Health official – significant increase in local diabetes cases

The number of local diabetes cases has risen significantly in the last 40 years, to become the second leading cause of death amongst citizens.

According to Yvonne Lewis, Director of the Health Ministry’s Health and Education Division, in 1980 Diabetes was the 7th leading cause of death.

By 2010 it had climbed to 3rd, and as of 2015 it was 2nd, behind only heart disease.

She says while a number of persons are genetically predisposed to this disease, many develop it because of their lifestyle.

And these days, she says the condition is being diagnosed at a younger age.

Cue In: Lewis Younger

Ms Lewis says citizens need to become better informed about the risk factors for diabetes, so they can reduce their chances of developing it.
