Devil’s Woodyard Mud Volcano erupts – roadway closed off

The roadway to the Devil’s Woodyard Mud Volcano has been closed off due to seismic activity in the area.

Three homes were this morning evacuated near the site in New Grant, Princes Town.

The first set of reported volcanic activities occurred at approximately 6pm yesterday.

The ODPM says since then, there have been two eruptions at 4:20am this morning, and another at 8:52am.

The state agency says to maintain public safety and security, the roadway to the site is currently closed to the general public, but is still open to local traffic.

It adds that although no homes or properties have been affected, 2 temporary shelters were established at the Hindustan Community Complex and Community Centre to accommodate any displaced persons if the need arises.

It is urging persons to avoid the area, since fresh mud and gases continue to secrete from the crater of the volcano.

An EMA team meanwhile has been mobilized to visit the site to conduct air and soil testing in the area.

It says members of the Fire and Police Services are also there to maintain public safety and security.
