Couva businessmen want guns for protection amid increased robberies

There were several calls at a TTPS Town Hall Meeting last night for businessmen in Couva to be equipped with guns.

It comes amid an increase in the number of robberies there.

One such call came from the Couva/Pt Lisas Chamber of Commerce President, Ramchand Maraj.

He believes businessmen should be given priority to receive guns based on a rigorous assessment, to be able to properly protect themselves.

But Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police Deodat Dulalchan says the top cop is the only person who can adjudicate on the applications for guns.

Despite this, he says the Police Service continues to surpass records as it pertains to getting guns off the streets.
