CARPHA warns of diabetes risk for women

Caribbean women have higher rates of obesity, putting them at excess risk of developing diabetes.

CARPHA official Dr. Virginia Asin-Oostburg reminds that obesity is the strongest modifiable risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes in the Caribbean.

Today is World Diabetes Day and the theme is “Women and diabetes – our right to a healthy future”.

For women, diabetes carries additional health risks: they have more difficulty conceiving, and may have poor pregnancy outcomes.

CARPHA is encouraging women to maintain a healthy body weight since healthy eating and physical activity can prevent or delay type-2 diabetes.

For those already affected, it reminds that diabetes can be treated, and its consequences avoided or delayed with medication, regular screening and treatment.
