Opposition Leader calls for labour reforms

Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar is calling for major overhauls in the local labour landscape.

In her Labour Day message, she says in order for this country to become globally competitive, the development of its human resource capital is crucial.

However she claims the Government has instead shown a disregard for the people, with recent public sector retrenchments, and policies that put added pressure on the average working citizen.

In order to improve the rights of workers, Mrs Persad-Bissessar wants a complete and comprehensive revision of the Industrial Relations Act, the development of a comprehensive Labour Code, an enhancement and upgrading of the Occupation Safety and Health Act, amendments to the Retrenchment and Severance Benefits Act, upgrading the Maternity Act, as well as working towards the establishment of a living wage for the unorganized Labour force, and the establishment of an Unemployment Insurance Fund.

She believes urgent amendments to the Registration Recognition and Certification Board are also required to speed up the recognition of Trade Unions.
