Judge rules in favour of Opposition, halts submission of property tax forms

The Opposition today scored a major victory in its fight against the Property Tax.

At 5:45pm, High Court Judge Justice Frank Seepersad ruled in favour of a filing made by several Opposition members, to temporarily stop citizens from submitting property tax forms.

It also paves the way for an official legal challenge of the Tax.

One of the names on the filing is former UNC Member Devant Maharaj, who spoke with 103FM News soon after the ruling.

The filing argues that the Property Tax form and process are illegal, unconstitutional and ultra vires (beyond one’s legal power or authority).

Mr Maharaj says the Opposition is ready for the challenge, and will take the matter all the way to the Privy Council if necessary.

Just yesterday, the Finance Minister took steps to extend the deadline date for the submission of forms.
