Local businessman Robert Bermudez tipped for UWI Chancellor appointment
Local businessman Robert Bermudez will take over as Chancellor of the University of the West Indies this year, once it is approved by the University Council.
Education Minister Anthony Garcia made the announcement at the post cabinet media briefing today, stating that the Council appointed a Search Committee to identify a successor to current Chancellor Sir George Alleyne.
He outlined the Search Committee’s candidate of choice, which was presented to CARICOM Heads of Government at their meeting in February in Guyana.

Once approved, Mr. Bermudez would become the second T&T national to hold the position of UWI Chancellor—the first being Dr. Eric Williams.
The businessman is currently the Chairman of Massy Holdings Limited.
Meanwhile, following Mr. Garcia’s statement at the media breifing on Thursday, the UWI’s headquarters issued a statement, noting with surprise at the announcement made by the T&T Minister of Education.
It stated “The matter of the appointment of the University’s new Chancellor is an item on the agenda for the upcoming Annual Business Meeting of University Council, set to take place on April 27, 2017, in Barbados. It is at this meeting that a final decision will be made on the new UWI Chancellor.”
