Agriculture Minister refutes claims of ‘attacking workers’ with closure of Caroni Green Limited

Agriculture Minister Clarence Rambharat is refuting claims that the closure of Caroni Green Limited is an ‘attack on workers’.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the allegations were leveled against him by Opposition MP Rudy Indarsingh.

Mr Rambharat however describes the decision as a responsible one given the company’s poor performance for the last 3 years.

He also reveals that based on CGL reports, administrative expenses including salaries, far outweigh its revenue.

Mr Rambharat says the Ministry’s need to focus on farmers and fisherfolk and reduce these costs justifies the closure of this under-performing entity.

In that regard, he assures that workers will be treated fairly during the process.

He also addressed calls by CGL CEO Sharma Lalla to reconsider the decision saying the company was examined by a committee and a recommendation was made for its immediate closure.

Mr Rambharat says a Board, headed by Mr Jerry Hospedales and approved by the Cabinet, will work with the Ministry to determine the way forward.
