Some parts of Florida have already begun to experience storm surges and gusty winds associated with Hurricane Helene.

Helene is currently at Category 3, but is expected to reach Category 4 by the time it makes landfall.

The National Hurricane Centre says maximum sustained winds have increased to near 205 km/h.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency in almost every county in the state.

Thousands have been evacuated from their homes, with dire warnings issued to those who refused to leave.

And, given Helene’s size authorities expect storm surges and dangerous winds stretching well inland.
