Education Ministry finds discrepancy in billing for school transport

The Education Ministry says it may have been overpaying for the transport of schoolchildren.

It currently has an arrangement with the PTSC for the transport of schoolchildren, in a bid to “reduce wastage”.

The Ministry says it recently began to review the number of students accessing the service, in a bid to reduce wastage.

And it claims to have found that the 34,000 seat figure being billed to the Ministry monthly, is almost three times greater that the figures tallied after submissions from school principals.

It says the tally has shown figures that average less than 12,000 students monthly, which would mean that the Ministry is paying for over 20,000 unoccupied seats.

It says further checks revealed that the 34,000 figure being billed to the Ministry has been the same figure for almost 10 years, and the excess of fifty million dollars currently being paid to the PTSC annually must be reduced.

The transport service presently services 67 primary schools and 90 secondary schools across Trinidad, and the Ministry says it was initially introduced to help students on a needs basis.
