2 murders on Carnival Monday, tourist crushed to death by music truck

It was a bloody start to Carnival 2018, with two murders and an accidental death.

According to the TTPS, a 24-year-old man died at the San Fernando General Hospital after being stabbed during J’ouvert celebrations along Cipero Street in San Fernando.

His identity was not revealed.

In the other incident, a 17 year old boy was fatally stabbed after becoming involved in an altercation while walking along the Southern Main Road, in the vicinity of Factory Road, Chaguanas.

Media reports have identified him as Reshad Singh of Freeport.

Three persons were detained by police in connection with his death.

In a media release issued this afternoon, the TTPS says one of these incidents has been directly linked to Carnival.

The accidental death meanwhile occurred in Port of Spain around 1pm today.

According to police, a 77 year old man, visiting from Florida, died after he got caught under the wheels of a music truck as it reversed in the vicinity of Victoria Square.

He was crushed and died.

His name has not been released.

And this was not the only mishap involving a music truck.

Around 7:30 this morning also at Victoria Avenue, a 30 year old Diego Martin woman falling off a music truck.

In light of those incidents, the TTPS is advising masqueraders and spectators to remain a safe distance from music trucks and other heavy vehicles.

The violent incidents meanwhile occurred despite numerous exercises prior to J’Ouvert celebrations.

According to the TTPS, thousands of police and army officers began blanketing the country from midnight on Carnival Sunday.

It says personnel were positioned at strategic points in and around Port of Spain, San Fernando, Chaguanas, Tunapuna, Arima, Crown Point, Roxborough and other Carnival locations.

During anti-crime exercises carried out throughout the country, several persons were arrested for possession of narcotics; possession of weapons/sharp instruments of any type; resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.
